The Pantheon stands in the northern “Campo Marzio” area.
As deduced by its name’s etymology (pan = all and teon = deity), it is e temple dedicated to all gods. It is the best conserved Roman monument, has the largest dome ever built in the history of architecture and is considered to be the predecessor of all modern venues.
The first builder of the Pantheon was Marco Agrippa (27-25 BC), Augustus’ son, who was highly involved in the construction.
His goal was to erect a temple in honor of all gods, which were numerous due to the Romans’ habit of acquiring forms of worship from the civilizations they conquered. A Roman legend states that this was the place where Rome’s founder, Romulus, was lifted up by an eagle towards the heavens at the moment of his death.
